What you’ll do…
As a Mechanical Engineering Field Service Engineer, you will provide efficient value for money service to help Forestry England achieve its goals by maintaining and repairing vehicles and specialist forestry equipment, while ensuring that the fleet is professionally and cost effectively maintained to maximise availability. This will include inspecting, repairing, servicing, welding fabrication and recovery work at worksites and other areas. You will typically be maintaining and repairing items such as chainsaws, trailers, quads, agricultural machinery such as tractors and their attachments, cars, vans, and 4X4s
This post will report to the Mechanical Engineering Charge Hand / Service Delivery administrator.

Where you’ll work…
This role is managed from our Santon Downham Workshop situated in Thetford Forest, Norfolk. This workshop supports Forestry England's East, South and West districts and also Westonbirt Arboretum so travelling will be expected. These roles are based across our West and South Districts. The South roles will be looking to be based around the Lyndhurst area with a Forestry England site used as a reporting point The West role will be based in and around our Westonbirt Arboretum and using this as a reporting point.
WEST - The West England Forest District team are custodians of 38,500 ha of the Nations Forests in the west and south-west of England. Our woods can be found from Shrewsbury in the north to the majestic veteran trees of Savernake Forest near Marlborough, and the conifer forests on Bodmin Moor, and ancient woodlands of the Glynn Valley in Cornwall. The district is based in the historic Forest of Dean which lies between the rivers Wye and Severn in Gloucestershire. Over two-thirds of our woodlands lie in protected landscapes, with two National Parks, and numerous National Landscapes and sites of special scientific interest. Our team sustainably produce over 220,000 tonnes of timber per annum, whilst providing safe homes for a wide range of wildlife from the common to the rare. We are proactively managing our woods to mitigate against our changing climate and the biodiversity crisis. We are passionate about welcoming visitors to the Nations Forests and encouraging everyone to enjoy our natural world in a responsible way, supporting healthy lifestyles and mental health.
SOUTH - The South England Forest District team is made up of around 170 people with a diverse range of roles - from foresters and wildlife rangers to civil engineers, and ecologists to marketing professionals. We all contribute towards the management of 46,000 hectares of public forest estate that stretch from Sussex to Dorset, and from Berkshire to the Isle of Wight. Nearly all of our forests are within either a National Park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Much of this forest is of high national importance for nature conservation and wildlife, and of international importance for biodiversity. South England Forest District is therefore responsible for land that includes Special Areas of Conservation (for habitats), Special Protection Areas (for birds) and Ramsar sites (for wetlands). We also provide public access and recreation in our forests, with nearly 50 million visits every year to South England Forest District.
